Atomic scale resolution
Due to the variation of friction on an atomic scale the 23*sqrt(3) reconstruction of Au(111) can clearly be seen in the lateral force image; the observed contrast in the lateral force image is much more pronounced than in the corresponding normal force image, which indicates that the observation of the row structure on Au(111) is indeed predominantly due to atomic scale friction processes.
